Happy Veteran’s Day! Learn About Veteran Service Officers (VSO)

As we celebrate Veteran’s Day on Tuesday, November 11th, StaffLink would like to share a resource for veterans and their spouses.

Veteran Service Officers are a great resource! Veteran Service Officers are professional advisors provided by the Veteran’s Administration. Veteran Service Officers assist veterans and their families in navigating long-term care options and VA benefits, such as the  Aid and Attendance pension. This pension can provide funds to pay for home care, assisted living and nursing facility care. The coordinator helps the veteran determine their eligibility for the benefit and in completing and submitting all relevant paperwork and documentation.

These professionals are usually housed at the VA hospital or a Veteran’s nursing home facility. Veteran Service Officers are hired and paid via VA funding. Veterans and their family members do not pay a fee for their assistance.

Veteran Service Officers should NOT be confused with the plethora of private companies and consultants that assist veterans and their families in applying for the Aid and Attendance pension. These companies purport to do this for no upfront fee, however, they do require that the veteran sign an agreement to pay them 15-25 percent of their monthly benefits for perpetuity once they are approved for benefits. The reduction in monthly benefits limits the veteran’s ability to find the appropriate and best long-term care services. Families that have wanted to end this arrangement with the consulting company have been successfully sued by the attorney’s of the companies. These companies have been successfully sued for fraud by families.  One such company, Missouri based, has been successfully sued for keeping 99% of a veteran’s monthly pension!
